Specification - ASTM A106 / API 5L

Black seamless (welded not permitted) fully killed Carbon steel pipe for high-temperature, high-pressure service in three grades of seamless pipe of varying strength.

Although the physical and chemical properties for Grades A and B are comparable to those for A53 pipe, and the types of testing required for both specifications are similar, the tests prescribed for A106 are more stringent and are applied to smaller lots of pipe. Therefore, A106 is preferred for exacting services.

Grades A and B are obtainable in most sizes and schedule numbers, Grade B permits higher carbon and manganese contents than Grade A. The A106 Grade B supplied by ASTM Seamless Pipes has a maximum carbon content of 0.23%.

    Pipe Ends

    Unless otherwise specified, pipe ends are normally supplied as below:

    1. Up to and including 46.3mm O.D size are supplied with plain ends cut square
    2. Above 48.3mm O.D sizes (except for Double Extra-Strong pipe) are supplied with plain ends bevelled
    3. All Double Extra-Strong pipe is supplied with plain ends cut square

    End Preparation

    1. Bevelled ends for API steel linepipe are normally to API specification. i.e. Angle 30 + 5 -0
    2. Bevelled ends for steel pipe to ASTM specifications are notmally to ANSI B16.25. i.e. Angle 30 +5 -0

    Dimensional Standards

    The Dimensional standards for pipe to ASME B36.10 includes products covered by the following materical specifications.

    ASTM - A53, A106, A134, A135, A139, A333, A335, A369, A376, A381, A405, A409M, A426, A523, A524 and A530, API - 5L, 5LX and 5LS

    SA106:

    SA means that the ASTM standard has been approved / adopted by the BPVC
    (Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code by ASME).

    ASME SA 106 Grade B Specification covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service (Note 1) in NPS 1-8 to NPS 48 inclusive, with nominal (average) wall thickness as given in ANSI B36.10. SA 106 Pipes having other dimensions may be furnished provided such pipe complies with all other requirements of this specification. ASME SA 106 Grade B Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes shall be suitable for bending, flanging, and similar forming operations, and for welding. When the steel is to be welded, it is presupposed that a welding procedure suitable to the grade of steel and intended use or service will be utilized.

    Examples:
    ASME says about ASTM A53: there are no differences.
    ASME says about ASTM A106: Identical, except for editorial differences at 8.1, 13.4, and 24.1 and deletion of ASTM caveat 1.5 (these are articles referring to the BPVC).

  • ASTM A106 Grade B/ A106 Gr.B Scope

    In addition to the marking specified in Specification A 999/A 999M, the marking should have the length, an additional symbol -S-, if ASME SA 106 Grade B Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes conforms to any of the Supplementary Requirements S1 to S6, the schedule number of the pipe is ordered to a schedule number viz. SCH 5,10,20,30,40,60,80,100,120,140,160,XS, XXS, STD, and the heat number of or manufacturer-s number by which the heat can be identified as per ASME SA 106 Grade B.

    ASTM A106 Seamless Pressure Pipe (also known as ASME SA106 pipe) covers seamless carbon steel nominal wall pipe for high-temperature service. Suitable for bending, flanging and similar forming operations.

    NPS 1-1/2" and under may be either hot finished or cold drawn. NPS 2" and larger shall be hot finished unless otherwise specified.

    ASTM A106 Grade B/ A106 Gr.B Process

    Killed steel, with primary melting process being open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric-furnace, possibly combined with separate degassing or refining.

    Steel cast in ingots or strand cast is permissible.

    Hot-finished pipe need not be heat treated.

    Cold-drawn pipe shall be heat treated after the final cold draw pass.

    Hydrostatic Testing

    Inspection test pressures produce a stress in the pipe wall equal to 60% of specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) at room temperature. Maximum Pressures are not to exceed 2500 psi for NPS3 and must stay under 2800 psi for the larger sizes. Pressure is maintained for not less than 5 seconds.

    ASME SA 106 Grade B shall conform to a carbon equivalent (CE) of 0.50 maximum as determined by the following formula:
    CE = %C + %Mn/6 + (%Cr + %Mo + %V)/5 + (%Ni + %Cu)/15 . A lower Carbon equivalent ration maximum may be agreed upon between the purchaser and the producer.

Lengths

Lengths required shall be specified on order. No “jointers” permitted unless otherwise specified. If no definite lengths required, following practice applies: Single Random — 17" ~ 24" lengths Double Random — 36" ~ 44" lengths

Required Markings on Each Length

(On Tags attached to each ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe Bundle in case of Bundled Pipe) Rolled, Stamped, or Stenciled (Mfrs. Option) Manufacturer’s name or brand. Length of pipe. A106 A, A 106 B, A 106 C. ANSI schedule number. Hydrostatic test pressures and/or NDE; Weight per foot (NPS 4 and larger) or NH if neither is specified. Additional “S” if tested supplementary requirements.
