ASTM A376 ASME SA376	Seamless Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe for High-Temp Central-Station Service.	Austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Better surface than A312 pipe.

This specification covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature central-station service. The grades covered are five H grades and two nitrogen grades. Pipe may be either hot finished or cold finished, with a suitable finishing treatment. All pipes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition unless the order specifically states that no final heat treatment shall be applied. Tensile tests, hydrostatic test, nondestructive electric tests, ultrasonic tests, eddy-current tests, tension tests, and flattening tests shall be made to conform to the requirements specified.

Scope

1. This specification covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature central-station service. Among the grades covered are H grades and nitrogen grades that are specifically intended for high-temperature service.

2. Optional supplementary requirements (S1 through S10) are provided.

3. Grades TP321 and TP321H have lower strength requirements for nominal wall thicknesses greater than 3/8 in. [9.5 mm].

4. The dimensionless designators NPS (nominal pipe size) and DN (Diametre Nominel) have been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size.”

316L SS Seamless Pipe UNS S31603 Introduction

316L Pipe is the low carbon version of 316 stainless. With the addition of molybdenum, the steel is popular for use in severe corrosion environments due to the materials immunity from boundary carbide precipitation (sensitization). The material is widely used in heavy gauge welded components and weld annealing is only required where the material is for use in high stress environments. 316L Pipe has an extensive variety of uses especially in marine applications due to the materials high corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel 316/316L Design Features

316 stainless steel is more resistant to atmospheric and other mild environments than Type 304. it is resistant to dilute solutions (i.e. 1-5%) of sulfuric acid up to 120°F. However, in certain oxidizing acids, 316 SS is less resistant than Type 304.
316 is susceptible to carbide precipitation when exposed in the temperature range of 800° - 1500°F and therefore is susceptible to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. Annealing after welding will restore corrosion resistance.
316L SS has the same composition as 316 SS except the carbon content is held below 0.03%. Not unexpectedly, its general corrosion resistance and other properties closely correspond to those of 316 SS. However, it does provide immunity to intergranular attack in the as-welded condition or with short periods of exposure in the temperature range of 800° - 1500°F. The use of 316L SS is recommended when exposure in the carbide precipitation range is unavoidable and where annealing after welding is not practical. However, prolonged exposure in this range may embrittle the material and make it susceptible to intergranular attack.
The maximum temperature for scaling resistance in contnuous services is about 1650°F, and 1500°F for intermittent service.
