ASTM A376 ASME SA376	Seamless Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe for High-Temp Central-Station Service.	Austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high temperature and general corrosive service. Better surface than A312 pipe.

This specification covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature central-station service. The grades covered are five H grades and two nitrogen grades. Pipe may be either hot finished or cold finished, with a suitable finishing treatment. All pipes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition unless the order specifically states that no final heat treatment shall be applied. Tensile tests, hydrostatic test, nondestructive electric tests, ultrasonic tests, eddy-current tests, tension tests, and flattening tests shall be made to conform to the requirements specified.

Scope

1. This specification covers seamless austenitic steel pipe intended for high-temperature central-station service. Among the grades covered are H grades and nitrogen grades that are specifically intended for high-temperature service.

2. Optional supplementary requirements (S1 through S10) are provided.

3. Grades TP321 and TP321H have lower strength requirements for nominal wall thicknesses greater than 3/8 in. [9.5 mm].

4. The dimensionless designators NPS (nominal pipe size) and DN (Diametre Nominel) have been substituted in this standard for such traditional terms as “nominal diameter,” “size,” and “nominal size.”

317L SS Seamless Pipe UNS S31703 Introduction

Stainless steel AISI 317L has as its main characteristic the great addition of molybdenum to its chemical composition, which guarantees an increased resistance to chemical attack when compared with chromium-nickel-molybdenum austenitic steels of the type AISI 316L. This grade has approximately 1% more chromium, nickel and molybdenum when compared with austenitic steel AISI 316L. Grade AISI 317L offers even better creep deformation characteristics and mechanical resistance to high temperatures when compared with conventional stainless steels. The American denomination “low carbon”, or simply “L”, of grade AISI 317L ensures resistance to sensitization during welding or when thermal processes are applied due to the low carbon in its chemical composition. The combination of molybdenum and nitrogen in the chemical composition of this grade is particularly effective in increasing the resistance to pitting corrosion and crevice, especially in acid medium with chlorides and sulfur compounds at high temperatures. In addition, nitrogen also contributes to increasing the mechanical strength of the alloy. The main applications of AISI 317L are dedicated to the chemical industry, petroleum and petrochemical industries, industries producing paper and pulp, and as condensers in power stations using fossils and nuclear fuels. It is intended where it is required to have corrosion resistance to strong organic acids, such as the naphthenic acids found in the petroleum refining.

Principal Design Features

317 is a higher chromium, nickel and molybdenum version of 316 stainless designed principally for increased strength and corrosion resistance.

Applications

Textile, pulp paper and chemical equipment, for corrosion resistance.

Machinability

Low speeds and constant feeds will minimize this alloy's tendency to work harden. Tougher than 304 stainless with a long stringy chip, the use of chip breakers is recommended.

Welding

All common fusion and resistance methods except oxyacetylene welding have proven successful. Use AWS E/ER317 or 317L filler metal for best results.

Hot Working

All common hot working processes are possible with this alloy. Heat to 2100-2300 F (1149-1260 C). Avoid working this material below 1700 F (927 C). For optimum corrosion resistance, a post-work annealing is recommended.

Cold Working

Shearing, stamping, heading and drawing can be successfully performed . To remove internal stress, a post-work annealing is recommended.

Annealing

1850-2050 F (1010-1121 C), followed by rapid cooling.

Hardening

This alloy does not respond to heat treatment. Cold work will cause an increase in both hardness and strength.
